Washington DC Area On-Location Family Photography Sessions
Outdoor Family Photography Sessions
I regularly use several outdoor locations in Maryland and Northern Virginia for outdoor family photography sessions. At booking, we’ll discuss the vision you have for your images, your family’s lifestyle and aesthetic, and where you’ll be driving from, and then determine the best location for your family based on this information.
My recommended locations do not have an additional location or permit fee.
Additional locations with a permit fee include Meadowlark Botanical Gardens ($25 permit fee + $3/person entry), the Tidal Basin, National Mall, and Memorial Parks ($50 permit fee + $90 application), The National Arboretum ($250 permit fee), and all Montgomery County Parks, including Brookside Gardens ($350 permit fee.) Locations such as the MLK Memorial, Dumbarton Oaks, and The National Shrine do not allow any professional or commercial photography.
I’m also happy to scout new-to-me locations if you have a specific location in mind.
For outdoor sessions I recommend either a sunrise or sunset session to take advantage of the best lighting.
Exact times will vary depending on time of year and daylight savings, but will typically mean a start time around either 6:00am or 6:30pm during summer, and 7:30am or 3:00pm during winter.
Booking and Availability:
To guarantee your preferred date, I recommend booking at least 4 weeks in advance for weekday sessions and 8 weeks in advance for weekend sessions.
A 50% retainer and signed session agreement is required to book.

Exact locations with parking and meeting instructions will be delivered in an informational packet after booking. During our discussions about the location for your session, we’ll also consider the driving distance for your family depending on where you’re coming from.
1. Lake-Front Park With Lots of Variety
Located approximately 30 minutes from Downtown Washington DC.
Some favorite backdrops within this location include: a bridge, small playground, picnic area, trails, and of course, the lake.
2. Small Rustic Garden
Located approximately 30 minutes outside Downtown Washington DC. This location has less variety than the lakefront option, but is good for families with younger children since it’s smaller with less walking.
3. Grounds of Historic Mansion
Located approximately 40 minutes outside Downtown Washington DC. This location has lots of variety with formal gardens, large stone staircases, stone archways, a large field, playground, and front lawn.
While my sample photos from this location are primarily maternity session photos, this location would work very well for family portraits.
4. City Park With Walking Trails, Creek, Shallow Wading, and Forested Areas
Located approximately 10 minutes from Downtown Washington DC. This location is great for more casual family sessions – picnicking, photos with the creek, and wading in ankle-depth water are all options here.
Due to weekend road closures, this location is only available for weekday sessions.
